I prefer fishing at range, though I know that I have missed out at times by not fishing the margins, so now I tend to have at least one rod a bit closer in.

All i have is 2 1/4 pounds rods which are fine for close to medium range about 50 to 100 yards, but at times i would like to cast out 120-30 yards as thats where the fish seem to hold up when thay are under presher But we can't have it all ways can we as 3 1/4 pound rods are expensive .

I'm the same as you "tarpon", I also have 2 1/4 rods and its a bit annoying at times when you can see them moving around further out than the tackle will withstand. Maybe I should get the "enemy"(ex) off my back and start looking to get some beefier rods etc.

There's no point fishing at mega range unless you are very accurate. You need some expensive kit and a developed technique with casting and baiting options (Baitboats are cheating!). As Mr. C says, never ignore closer spots. fish where the fish are!
